Today an estimated 13,000 Telus employees across the country have given up their day off to help those hard-pressed community volunteer services that always have more work than hands to do it. Among the hundreds of projects being undertaken by Telus volunteers in the company's eighth annual Day of Giving is the Kid Power Conference at Strathcona Community Centre where 75 Grade 5-to-7 students from Strathcona and Mount Pleasant elementary schools will be teamed up with 15 Grade 11s from St. George's school.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau says a proposed west-east pipeline project will not go forward unless it addresses key environmental concerns.

Calgary-based TransCanada Corp. is in the process of lining up potential producers who would use the proposed pipeline, which would run from Alberta to New Brunswick.

OTTAWA--The Senate asked external auditors examining the travel expenses of Sen. Pamela Wallin to broaden their investigation over concerns she was claiming refunds for activity unrelated to Senate business, the Star has learned.

The Senate subcommittee that had ordered external reviews of the expenses of four senators -- Wallin, Mike Duffy, Mac Harb and Patrick Brazeau -- met on April 16 to hear an oral report from auditors at the forensic accounting firm Deloitte on what they had found.

Female human remains pulled from Lake Ontario

Toronto police have identified a body wrapped in a garbage bag and pulled from Lake Ontario Wednesday as a female.

Const. Victor Kwong said he expects more details to be released as the coroner continues their examination of the body Thursday.

A forensics unit was on scene Wednesday and had set up a tent on the pier near Captain John's Harbour Boat Restaurant.

Around noon Wednesday, a caller told police they discovered a body floating south of the shore off Yonge St.

No age or identifying information has been released.

Wildrose Robocalls: CRTC Fines Party With $90,000 For Violations

EDMONTON - Alberta's Opposition Wildrose Party says it has paid a $90,000 penalty imposed by federal regulators for violating automated phone call rules.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission says Wildrose broke the rules in 2011 and before, during and after the April 2012 provincial election.

Wildrose party president David Yager says the company that made the automated calls assured the party that it was following the rules.

He declined to name the company, but says the firm had made similar calls for other political parties.
